TAFP WRITERS’ GUIDELINES
TAFP accepts editorial contributions for publication on www.tafp.org and in our e-newsletter, TAFP News Now. TNN is distributed at least twice each month to TAFP-member family physicians, family medicine residents and students, and other health professionals in Texas. All submitted works must appeal to this audience.
The first step to publication on www.tafp.org is to submit a story idea. Please contact TAFP director of communications, Jonathan Nelson at jnelson@tafp.org with a brief topic description and supporting preliminary research, if available, for initial approval. Current and archived articles are available in the News & Insights department of www.tafp.org. We encourage referring to previous articles for examples of writing style and topics.
Stories chosen for publication may use a conversational voice or humor, and must be original works. We prefer sourcing information conversationally within the story rather than using endnotes.
Use bullets sparingly, and only when necessary. Consider including information boxes for lists of bullets instead of running them in the body of the text, and then write the points in sentence- and paragraph-form for the body.
For data comparison, we encourage the use of visual aids such as charts and graphs. If submitting a visual aid, please provide the actual data points along with any created materials. TAFP editors must be able to rebuild the visual aids in our publishing software using the author’s data.
All manuscripts must be typed and range between 600 and 2,800 words, unless previously approved by the TAFP communications team. The author should include his or her name, mailing address, e-mail address and telephone number where editors can call during the work day. Also include a short biographical paragraph for publication so readers may contact the author directly, if preferred. Authors may also include a headshot photo. Photos should be jpgs that are at least 1,000 x 1,000 pixels.
Copy deadlines are set after the first communication with the TAFP communications team. After submission, editors may request further information, source contact information, proof of fact-checking or any research, studies or data referenced in the story. All articles will go through an editing process by the TAFP editors to ensure coherence with TAFP style guidelines.
All materials may be submitted to the Texas Academy of Family Physicians by e-mail or mail.
