Third-year resident Brendon Martin, MD, believes that the physician-patient relationship is just as important as the treatment provided during an appointment. After completing an undergraduate degree at the University of Florida and a medical degree at Howard University in Washington D.C., Martin matched into “the best specialty ever” (his words!) at Baylor College of Medicine, where he currently serves as chief resident. There, he practices in an urban setting working with mostly underserved and under-resourced patients.

Who or what inspired you to become a family physician?
I was inspired to become a family physician by the numerous patients that I helped serve in our nation's capital. Speaking with many of the patients about their general idea of health, the lifestyles that they have, and the context and social determinants that they live within brought me a sense of fulfillment and purpose that I had not felt in any other specialty. This has only been further magnified during my practice as a resident and the privilege to work with my patients long-term serving as a cheerleader as they continue to prioritize their health.

What has surprised you most about family medicine?
What has surprised me most about family medicine is how close and meaningful the relationships you foster with the patients become. Every time I see my patients as a return visit, there is always the exchange of a big familiar smile followed by a therapeutic double handshake or hug. The opportunities we have to form connections with our patients are equally as important as the treatment plans we work with them to create.

Why do you choose to be a TAFP member?
I chose to be a member of TAFP because of the amazing community of family physicians here in Texas that are all working to do the challenging and rewarding work of serving our native Texans through family medicine. I cherish the opportunity to meet and form relationships with other Texas physicians working to make the lives and health of our citizens better.

What do you enjoy doing outside of medicine?
Outside of medicine, I love physical activity and am often running through Houston's beautiful parks and neighborhoods. I am excited that I get to pursue this personal passion through my upcoming sports medicine fellowship! Because life is meant to be in balance, I have also taken up baking cookies and find utmost joy in sharing them with my co-residents and friends! Otherwise, I'm spending time with my wife and dog watching a fun show on Netflix!

TAFP’s Member of the Month program highlights Texas family physicians in TAFP News Now and on the TAFP website. We feature a biography and a Q&A with a different TAFP member each month and his or her unique approach to family medicine. If you know an outstanding family physician colleague who you think should be featured as a Member of the Month or if you’d like to tell your own story, nominate yourself or your colleague by contacting TAFP by email at tafp@tafp.org or by phone at (512) 329-8666.
