She may not have trained in Texas, but Shira Goldstein, MD, FAAFP, got here as fast as she could. Immediately after residency she worked with a private practice in rural Pennsylvania, practicing ambulatory and hospital medicine, and supervising medical students and residents. But after a couple of years, Goldstein and her husband moved to Texas where she transitioned to an academic role at UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School. There, she practices full-spectrum family medicine and is residency faculty, as well as serves as the Director of Medical Student Education for the Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Who or what inspired you to become a family physician?
As a child, I was captivated by the TV show “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.” I admired how the fictional Dr. Quinn practiced full-spectrum medicine and built deep, lasting relationships with her patients. That early fascination stayed with me, and as a medical student, I found myself drawn to primary care for the very same reasons—the opportunity to provide comprehensive care while forming meaningful, long-term connections with patients.

What ultimately drew you to academics?
I have always been drawn to academics because of my passion for evidence-based medicine and medical education. I enjoy the dynamic environment of academic medicine, where continuous learning, teaching, and collaboration are at the forefront. The opportunity to mentor and shape future physicians while staying engaged with the latest advancements in patient care is what ultimately led me to this path.

Why do you volunteer as a preceptor?
I volunteer as a TAFP preceptor because I value every opportunity to introduce preclinical medical students to the breadth and impact of family medicine. Mentoring future physicians allows me to share my passion for the field, inspire interest in primary care, and help shape the next generation of well-rounded, compassionate clinicians.

Why do you choose to be a TAFP member?
I choose to be a TAFP member because I strongly believe in its mission to promote patient health and advance the specialty of family medicine—both of which are vital to the well-being of our nation now and in the future. I also value the sense of community that TAFP fosters through continuing medical education and annual sessions, providing opportunities for professional growth, collaboration, and connection with fellow family physicians.

What do you enjoy doing outside of medicine?
Outside of medicine, I enjoy practicing yoga as a way to stay grounded and balanced. I also cherish spending quality time with my family, whether it’s exploring new places, enjoying outdoor activities, or simply relaxing together.
